Research Interests:

Sharon Petronella, MS, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the UTMB Department of Pediatrics in the Division of Clinical and Experimental Immunology & Infectious Diseases. As an investigator in the Asthma Pathogenesis Research Core of the UTMB NIEHS Center and the co-director of the Asthma and Lead Outreach Divisions of the UTMB NIEHS Community and Outreach Education Core, a major focus of her work has been translational or integrative research, i.e., building interfaces between and among environmental research, education, and community health. She has participated in and/or initiated multiple projects designed to elucidate the causes and mechanisms of asthma exacerbations related to air pollution and currently directs the health assessment component of the Houston Exposure to Air Toxics Study. As president of the Asthma Coalition of Texas, she has worked closely with state policy makers to inform and advocate for evidence-based environmental and public health legislation.
